Health & PE Requirements
Health and PE are supplemental, attendance-only courses. This means that MGLVA does not provide a structured curriculum for them. Instead, Learning Coaches supplement at home and record the time students spent in each subject each week. Attendance for these courses can only be marked through the LC account. Your student's end of the year hourly requirements are dependent upon your start month. Students who enroll in September or October are required to have 50 hours of Health and 90 hours of PE by the end of the school year. For students with later start dates, the requirements are prorated in the chart above for easy reference.
Physical Education: 90 Hours
Michigan's Department of Education expects students in grades K-8 to receive at least 2.5 hours per week of physical exercise. Our PE teacher, Ryan Schrecongost, will hold optional weekly 30 minute PE sessions with each class. It is up to the Learning Coach and student to be sure that the student gets at least 30 minutes of activity each school day.

Health: 50 Hours
Michigan's Department of Education also requires students to receive 50 hours of health education at each grade level. You can find your students grade level objectives/strands in the link below. Most of these hours will be provided by the Learning Coach at home as we do understand that many of these topics cover sensitive material/issues which should be covered at home. Typically, we only teach a Health class connect on Count Day to assist students and families with meeting the Count Day requirements.

Optional Art, PE, and Book A Week Class Connects
We are so lucky to be able to have teachers who teach class connects in subjects that have previously been attendance-only, which LCs had to supplement independently. This year, each teacher has PE with Mr. Ryan Schrecongost, Art with Mr. Jason Nutall, and Book A Week with Mrs. Jill Graetz. We recommend that you take advantage!

Spelling
2nd Grade does not have a specific Phonics curriculum. Instead, the Spelling course is designed to allow students to apply the phonics rules they have learned directly into written words. (This is great – as long as students already know all the phonics rules, which is why we are implementing Words Their Way, to fill in those phonics gaps.)
The 2nd Grade expectation is to spell most high frequency words (sight words or word wall words) correctly. All other words should be phonetically spelled and marked correct. Sight words are words such as: I, me, my, the, they, he, she, and so on. Phonetic spelling means that the student sounded out the word to the best of his/her ability. The student and the Learning Coach are able to read the word. As long as that criteria is met, please mark the word correct and move on.
